Novel protein isolates and new sources of proteins are being presented to the pet food industry in increasing frequency, many times with little information on the characteristics of the protein. The pet food industry is working to provide environmentally sustainable, better-for-you meat-alternative ingredients or meat isolates to those consumers that want to replace some, if not all, of the typical animal- or plant-based proteins in their pet’s diet. However, any new ingredient must first be evaluated for safety and concluded safe under the intended conditions of use prior to incorporation into pet food.
Dr. Ray Matulka, Director of Toxicology, discusses the different aspects of new protein-based feed ingredients that should be evaluated prior to use to decrease the risk of potential safety concerns or non-compliance.
