The US filed a case with the World Trade Organization (WTO), demanding the end to the European Union (EU) ban on genetically modified foods. EU claimed its legitimate right to establish regulatory directives to ensure that GMOs are put only on the market after careful assessment of risks. The case claims that EU’s moratorium violates WTO policy. Some individuals share the sentiment that people around the globe have consumed biotech food for years; biotech food helps nourish the world’s hungry population offering tremendous opportunity for improved health and nutrition; and protects the environment by reducing soil erosion, fuel consumption and pesticide use. Those involved in the field of biotechnology anxiously await a resolution.
